Another inspiring college football story

November 27, 2007

I love this stuff.  A kid plays high school football and graduates.  He’d like to go on to play football in college somewhere, but he doesn’t get any offers, not even from small colleges.  So, he enrolls at Oregon State and he’s watching a game from the stands, and he thinks to himself that he could play at that level.  Mind you, he’s all of 5′ 11″, 190 lbs.  He goes to the football office and asks if he can play, at least on the scout team, and gets turned away.  This happens for two years.  Finally, the coaching staff puts together an open-tryout, and he makes the team his junior year.  One of the scholarship players is ruled academically ineligible during his senior year, and so the university offers the kid a scholarship, just as a way of saying thank-you for sticking it out.

But the story doesn’t stop there.  A few injuries happen on the team, and suddenly he finds himself as the only fullback on the team.  Twelve carries for 19 yards and two touchdowns for the year.  Not bad for a kid who started out his career watching the games from the stands.

A late meme from John

Not sure how I missed this one.  Here goes:

Is there an emotion that you think has gotten stronger as you’ve aged?  If so, why do you think that has happened?

Probably empathy.  When I was a kid, especially in high school, I was pretty much the center of my own universe.  Now, I’m humbled by what people have to go through just to make it on a daily basis.

What is your most commonly recurring dream?  Why do you keep having that dream?

It’s been a while since I’ve had recurring dreams, but here’s the last one:  Before my divorce in 1999, I had this dream of watching a plane fly over head, only to watch in horror as it flew into the side of a mountain or spiraled and crashed to the ground below.  After my divorce that year, it stopped.  You draw your own conclusions as to what that all meant.

If the U.S. had to give up one state, which one would you pick?  Why?

How about Wisconsin?  Tillamook cheese is better anyway.  Oh wait, Favre is having a good year, so better hold that off until his retirement.

What is the biggest advantage men have over women?  How about the biggest advantage women have over men?

Men know stuff about tanks that women will never get.  Women understand the importance of matching shoes and purses.

What one thing have you done that pleased your parents the most?

Wow, there’s sure been plenty I’ve done that HASN’T pleased my parents, but that’s not the question here.  I suppose it would be making my own children a priority even in the face of adversity.

If you could be the Devil for one day, what would you do?

I would go take up residence in the NCAA officials, abolish the BCS, and institute a college football playoff system.

If you could have taken one class in school that you didn’t (or couldn’t), what would it be?

What guidelines do you think should exist for gun control?

Keep them out of the schools and off the streets.  Equip law enforcement with more fire power to enforce it.

What would it take for you to reconcile with your greatest enemy?

Very often, that person is myself.

Ok, I’d tag somebody for this thing, but I’m not sure who is even reading this blog any more.  If you’re one of the remnants, consider yourself tagged.

Dude’s got it bad

My question is, why the heck didn’t he just go up and introduce himself?

Hope this works out for him.
